FSC Overview
What is FSC?
There is growing concern across the world that unscrupulous forestry practices are causing ecological, social and economic damage, particularly in third-world and vulnerable areas.
What does that have to do with printing?
Just as an outdoor furniture setting is made from wood, so is paper. Pulp for paper can come from carefully managed or poorly managed forests, so FSC helps end-users to choose paper products made “responsibly”. There is a wide range of paper stocks available which carry FSC certification.
How does FSC work?
As timber goes through the various stages to become paper, every business along the line must have FSC certification - this is called the Chain-of-Custody (COC). If there is any break in the links along the chain, the final product cannot be FSC-Certified.
For example, if a paper mill did not have FSC certification, they could not sell their paper to merchants, claiming it to be FSC-Certified (even if the timber came from a forest which was FSC-Certified). The merchant, in turn, could not sell it to a printer as FSC-Certified. The printer, in turn, could not use the FSC logo on the printed product.
How can Newstyle help me?
As one of very few Australian printers to pass the rigorous FSC certification process, Newstyle is able to include the FSC logo on your printed material (when FSC-certified papers are used). This is a highly visible and credible demonstration of your commitment to reducing the impact of poor forestry practices.
We can advise and assist you with the selection of paper stocks, and placement of FSC-approved branding – contact us for further information.
